If you’re visiting New York City, few experiences are as iconic as walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. Stretching over the East River, the Brooklyn Bridge connects two of the city’s most vibrant boroughs: Manhattan and Brooklyn. This iconic bridge walk offers breathtaking skyline views, historic charm, and plenty of photo opportunities, making it a must-do for tourists.

Whether you’re planning your first visit or returning for another city break, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know. From where to start and what to expect, to tips for avoiding crowds and making the most of your day.

Why Do the Brooklyn Bridge Walk?

There’s something special about seeing the Manhattan skyline from the Brooklyn Bridge. At just over a mile long, this pedestrian-friendly pathway offers a unique way to experience NYC. Whether you’re walking solo or with family, it’s a great walk for anyone wanting to explore the city from a different perspective.

The Brooklyn Bridge walk gives you the chance to see both boroughs at once, whether you start in Manhattan or Brooklyn, with sweeping panoramic views on either side. It’s perfect for capturing iconic photos with skyline shots and glimpses of the Statue of Liberty. Plus, you’ll have easy access to nearby attractions like DUMBO, Brooklyn Heights, Wall Street, and Chinatown, all just a short stroll away.

Where to Start the Brooklyn Bridge Walk

You can begin your walk from either Manhattan or Brooklyn, and each direction offers something a little different.

From Manhattan

Start at Centre Street near City Hall Park. The entrance is easy to find and signposted. Walking this way gives you a close-up view of the bridge’s architecture as you head toward Brooklyn. It’s a quieter start, perfect if you plan to explore DUMBO or Brooklyn Bridge Park after.

From Brooklyn

Begin at Tillary Street and Adams Street, or take a more scenic route from Washington Street in DUMBO, where you’ll get postcard-perfect shots of the bridge framed between old warehouses. Walking from Brooklyn to Manhattan gives you a stunning skyline view for the entire walk. It’s especially magical at sunset.

Best Time to Walk the Brooklyn Bridge

The bridge is open 24/7, but timing makes a big difference, especially if you want to avoid crowds. Early mornings are quiet and peaceful, with soft lighting that’s perfect for photos, while late evenings offer romantic views of the city lit up at night. Midday tends to be the busiest, particularly on weekends and during the summer months. To steer clear of the heaviest foot and bike traffic, it’s best to avoid peak commuter hours on weekdays, typically between 8 to 10 am and 5 to 7 pm.

What to Expect on the Brooklyn Bridge Walk

The Brooklyn Bridge walk is around 1.1 miles (1.8 km) one way and typically takes between 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your pace and how often you stop. The pathway is a shared pedestrian and bike path with a wooden boardwalk and clearly marked lanes, so be sure to stick to the right. The bridge is also accessible to wheelchairs and strollers, although there is a gradual incline in both directions to keep in mind.

What to Bring

Before you set off on your Brooklyn Bridge walk, a little preparation goes a long way. Whether you’re out for a casual stroll or planning to stop and soak up the views, here are a few essentials to bring along for a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.

  • Comfortable shoes: With the bridge stretching just over a mile, you’ll be on your feet for a while. Supportive, comfortable shoes will help you enjoy the walk without sore feet slowing you down.
  • Water and snacks: There aren’t many spots to grab refreshments once you’re on the bridge, so it’s a good idea to bring your own. Staying hydrated is key, particularly during the summer months.
  • Camera or phone: The views from the bridge are some of the best in the city. From skyline shots to close-ups of the bridge’s architectural details, don’t miss your chance to snap a few memorable moments.
  • Sunscreen or a hat: With limited cover from the sun, especially around midday, protection is important. A hat or some SPF will help you avoid sunburn while you take in the views.
  • Layers: Even on warmer days, the breeze on the bridge can feel cool, especially if you’re walking in the morning or evening. A light jacket or extra layer will keep you comfortable throughout the walk.

Things to Do Nearby

There’s plenty to explore on both sides of the Brooklyn Bridge, making the walk even more rewarding. On the Brooklyn side, DUMBO offers chic cafes and cobblestone streets. Brooklyn Bridge Park is a scenic riverside escape with playgrounds, sports courts, and picnic areas that are ideal for a relaxing break. Nearby, Time Out Market serves up a lively mix of local food vendors and rooftop views, perfect for lunch or a drink. On the Manhattan side, you’ll find the historic South Street Seaport, a charming waterfront district filled with shops and eateries. A short stroll away, Chinatown and Little Italy offer a great mix of cultural flavor and quick bites.

Can You Drive Across the Brooklyn Bridge?

Yes, you can! The bridge has six lanes of vehicle traffic (three in each direction), but no toll is required, making it one of the few free crossings in the city. However, pedestrians and cars are separated, so walking and driving across the bridge are very different experiences.

While the walk gives you a leisurely, up-close perspective, driving the bridge can be a memorable part of a wider NYC road trip, especially at night when the skyline sparkles.

Renting a Vehicle to Explore More of NYC

If your Brooklyn Bridge walk inspires you to keep exploring, renting a car with SIXT is a great idea, perfect for day trips beyond Manhattan or to visit famous bridges like the Golden Gate Bridge. For more guides on iconic bridges, explore our breakdown of the original London Bridge.

There’s no drive quite like crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. Bold and instantly recognizable, this engineering masterpiece has been turning heads since 1937. But beyond the selfies and stunning skylines, this iconic bridge carries a legacy packed with surprising facts, record-breaking stats, and cultural firsts. Whether exploring San Francisco behind the wheel with SIXT or in your own ride, we’re diving into the top 10 facts that make the Golden Gate Bridge a landmark and legend of the American road.

The Bridge Stays Up Thanks to Just Two Cables

Hard to believe, but the entire Golden Gate Bridge is balanced and supported by just two main cables. No need to worry, though; each cable is packed with 27,572 strong individual wires forming a network within the cables that can safely secure the weight of the bridge and flowing traffic. These massive cables work in line with the suspension bridge system, draping over the towers and holding up the roadway using tension only, which means they are constantly being pulled tight to support the distribution of weight across the bridge. If you want to take a closer look, explore what the inside of one of these cables looks like at the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center.

Golden gate bridge

500 Planes Opened the Bridge

The completion of the Golden Gate Bridge was such a significant feat of American engineering that on the 27th May 1937, 500 planes from the United States Navy flew over the bridge to mark its opening. These featured numerous types of planes from a 42-ship armada, all there to celebrate the liberation of San Francisco from limited travel and subsequent regional growth.

The Carnival That Captivated San Francisco

San Francisco became the stage for one of the most spirited celebrations in American history. The city hosted what was to become a weeklong spectacle in honor of the grand opening of the Golden Gate Bridge. Endless parades marched through the street, lined with dancers and pageant queens, and entertainers from across the country. As the carnival ended, locals professed that few spectacles had drawn more interest in San Francisco’s history than the Golden Gate Bridge opening.

Time Is Eating Away at the Golden Gate

Despite only closing 3 times for earthquakes in its long history, its biggest aggressor is much less mighty. Rust. Every day, the salty air and fog are slowly wearing down this mighty structure of steel through a process called corrosion. Testament to the bridge’s incredible craftsmanship, the bridge was built to withstand this to a certain extent with extra-thick steel to accommodate the inevitable rust. But this isn’t enough to stop it in its tracks. To maintain its strength, special crews endlessly repair the bridge, scrubbing away the rust, treating the metal, and painting it to perfection. It is a never-ending makeup to keep this icon looking sharp. So next time you cruise across it in your SIXT rental, just know, this bridge fights hard to stay golden for your perfect photo opportunity.

The President Directed the First Crossing

On the day of the Golden Gate Bridge’s opening, President Franklin D. Roosevelt himself signaled the first vehicles to drive across the bridge. Straight from the White House, the President sent a telegraphic signal, a form of coded message common at the time, permitting the flow of traffic across the bridge. This liberation of San Francisco, allowing convenient travel, would change the city forever.

The Golden Gate Bridge Shut Down Ferries

Not everyone was happy about the opening of the bridge. Some locals felt the impact of change almost instantly, causing a loss of income from the bridge. South Pacific-Golden Gate Ferries were heavily relied upon for travel across San Francisco, carrying passengers across the bridge for a small fee. Following the bridge opening, ferries lost a considerable amount of business, leading them to dropping their fees for a single trip from 60 cents per car and a further 15 cents per occupant to 30 cents one way with 30 cents one way with 5 occupants by the 11th August 1937. As passengers decreased, opting for travel via the Golden Gate Bridge, South Pacific-Golden Gate Ferries halted operations by the summer of 1938, within a year of the bridge opening, leading to unemployment amongst local ferry workers.

Its Name Originates From 19th Century Trade

The Golden Gate Bridge stretches across the narrow strait known as the Golden Gate, a name that dates back to 1846, when U.S. Army Captain John C. Frémont named the strait due to its shining gateway to trade and opportunity. This historic trade route presented a “golden door” to the Pacific and the promise of California’s Gold Rush. When the bridge was designed, its planners honored this legacy by naming it after the strait, recognizing its importance as a key passage and a powerful symbol of new beginnings.

Hollywood Royalty Marked Its Opening

Hollywood royalty flew in from Los Angeles to honor the Golden Gate Bridge opening, turning the celebration into a true star-studded event. Big names of the day, including legendary entertainer Al Jolson, charismatic George Jessel, western star Buck Jones, and acclaimed Victor McLaglen, all took the stage, delivering unforgettable performances that energized the excited crowds. Their presence highlighted just how much this bridge meant, not just connecting two sides of the bay, but linking innovation with entertainment in a uniquely American way.

Adding a powerful musical touch, Oscar-winning composer and conductor Victor Young led the crowd through an incredible performance, raising the energy and making the event feel like a grand celebration of progress and culture. At SIXT, we see moments like this as a reminder of what bold vision and star power can build. Bridges, connections, and unforgettable experiences.

Cost of Construction

Though the bridge was built in only 4 years, the cost of construction was not so small. By 1937, when the bridge opened, it had cost over 35 million dollars. Even by today’s standards, this figure is enormous, but factoring in inflation, in 2025, this equates to just over 77 million dollars.

It was the Longest and Tallest Bridge in the World

At the time of its completion, the Golden Gate Bridge didn’t just make headlines, it made history. Stretching across the bay with the main span of 4200 feet, it shattered the previous record held by the George Washington Bridge, which stood at 3500 feet. But it wasn’t just about the length; its towers soared to 746 feet above the waterline, making them the tallest bridge towers in the world at the time. The sheer scale of the project, from its 1.7-mile total length to its 90-foot-wide deck, represented a triumph of American engineering ambition. With a suspension system that spanned distances previously thought impossible, the Golden Gate Bridge instantly became a symbol of modern marvels and American resolve. Its towering presence and bold international orange hue still command awe today.

London Bridge, 19th century

London’s iconic bridges have long played a starring role in the story of the city, linking neighborhoods, enabling trade, and becoming part of its identity. The Original London Bridge is especially notable for its long history and its many challenges over the centuries, including concerns that it was sinking into the River Thames under its own weight.

While most people are familiar with the nursery rhyme, few realize that the original bridge has not been in London for over 50 years. So, where was it moved to, and what made this bridge so important in the first place?

Where It All Began: A Roman Crossing

The very first incarnation of London Bridge dates back almost two thousand years. Built by the Romans around 50 AD, the original structure was likely a temporary military pontoon made of wood, erected shortly after they founded the city of Londinium. It helped connect the fledgling settlement on the north bank with routes leading into Kent and the southern territories of Britannia.

As Londinium grew in importance, so did the need for a more permanent crossing. The Romans eventually replaced their wooden construction with a sturdier version that laid the foundations, quite literally, for the many bridges to come.

The Medieval Bridge That Became a Mini City

The next major transformation came in the 12th century, when a stone bridge was commissioned by Peter of Colechurch, a priest and architect. Completed in 1209 after three decades of construction, the medieval Original London Bridge was a feat of engineering. With 19 stone arches and a drawbridge to let ships through, it was unlike anything else in Britain at the time.

But it wasn’t just a bridge. It was a bustling high street. At its peak, around 200 buildings lined the bridge. Homes, shops, and even a chapel dedicated to St Thomas Becket. This dense construction, however, came at a cost. Fires frequently broke out, the roadway was cramped and chaotic, and over time, the bridge became dangerously overloaded.

Disasters and Legends of the Original London Bridge

Over the years, the bridge endured centuries of disaster and change. It survived the Great Fire of 1666, though only just, and withstood floods, ice, and civil unrest. The bridge also became a popular feature in literature and art. And, of course, it inspired the famous nursery rhyme, ‘London Bridge is Falling Down,’ which some believe refers to Viking attacks, structural decay, or simply the frequency with which it needed repairs.

The London Bridge 19th Century Rebuild

By the 1800s, it was clear that the medieval bridge could no longer cope with London’s growing population and traffic. In 1831, a new granite bridge, designed by engineer John Rennie, was opened a few meters west of the original. Rennie’s bridge was wider, stronger, and better suited to modern demands. The old structure was dismantled, marking the end of a 622-year chapter in London’s history.

How London Bridge Ended Up in the Arizona Desert

By the 1960s, Rennie’s 19th-century bridge was struggling. Its foundations were sinking into the Thames, and traffic congestion had once again reached breaking point. Rather than demolish it, the City of London Corporation made the bold decision to sell it.

In 1968, American entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch bought the bridge for $2.46 million and had it shipped, stone by stone, to Lake Havasu City in Arizona, a town he was developing in the Mojave Desert.

Each granite block was carefully labelled, transported across the Atlantic, and reassembled on American soil. The reconstruction was completed in 1971, turning the Original London Bridge into one of the most unexpected tourist attractions in the United States.

Visiting the Original London Bridge in America Today

If you visit Lake Havasu City today, you’ll find the original 1831 London Bridge spanning a man-made canal along the Colorado River. It looks almost out of place in the desert surroundings, an elegant piece of Victorian engineering set against a backdrop of palm trees and wide-open skies.

Visitors can stroll across the bridge, admire the British-themed shops nearby, and even spot some of the original features, like the ornate lamp posts made from melted-down cannons from the Napoleonic Wars.

It might not be the oldest bridge in London anymore, but it remains a living slice of British history, just with a bit more sun.

The London Bridge Now

Back in the UK capital, a newer concrete and steel bridge, completed in 1973, now bears the name London Bridge. While not as architecturally stunning as Tower Bridge (often confused with its neighbor), the current London Bridge is still a vital artery for the city, serving cars, pedestrians, and trains. It’s also a great spot to soak up a view of the Thames and admire London’s ever-evolving skyline.

Whether you’re captivated by the story of the original London Bridge or keen to explore other world-famous spans like the Brooklyn Bridge or Golden Gate Bridge, SIXT makes it easy. With SIXT, you can rent a stylish, reliable vehicle and hit the road to discover this unique piece of British history under the wide-open skies, and plenty more unexpected adventures nearby.

Golden Hour views

Ever noticed how sunset times shift with the seasons? That’s not your imagination; sunset timings
depend on geographic location, time of year, and the Earth’s gentle tilt. Whether you’re standing
on the peaks of the Grand Canyon or the valleys of Yellowstone, sunset times are ever-changing.

How to Find Out the time of Sunset?

But when is sunset exactly? To stay ahead of the curve, you’ll want to check what time sunset is
using online tools such as Time and Date or apps like Solar Watch. Knowing your local sunset
times can be the difference between catching those glowing final rays and missing them entirely.

Whether you’re searching for photography hotspots, a romantic experience, or simply enjoying
the end of a great drive with SIXT, timing is everything

Golden Hour: Sunset Times to Capture Nature’s Best Light

Golden hour is that brief window just before sunset, when the sun touches the horizon and
everything it touches glows. In summer, it can linger; in winter, it vanishes quickly. That’s why
knowing the time of sunset is the key to unlocking this stunning natural display.

If you’re chasing golden hour, arrive early, position yourself strategically, and let nature do the rest.
Whether you’re capturing it through your camera lens or the passenger window on a scenic drive,
golden hour is a moment worth planning for and one that’s better paired with the comfort and
freedom of a SIXT rental car.

The Perfect Weather for Sunset

Want to catch a showstopping sky? Don’t forget to check the weather. Climate plays a huge role
in how colorful, or clouded, your sunset experience will be. Clear skies are beautiful, but a few
high-altitude clouds can scatter the sunlight.

Factors like humidity, air quality, and pollution all affect the visibility and color intensity of a
sunset. Moderate humidity can amplify the richness of colors, while excessive haze or pollution
might dim the display.

Monitor forecasts, looking for mid-level clouds around 20-25% coverage near sunset times. Pair
that with the perfect location, and you’ve got front-row seats to a mesmerizing spectacle. And
with a SIXT rental, getting there becomes part of the adventure.

Top Tips for Viewing the Perfect Sunset

Finding that epic sunset isn’t just about luck. Location can make or break your viewing
experience. Mountainous areas, wide-open fields, and coastal viewpoints offer the clearest and
most dramatic frames. Scout out the best sunset locations in the U.S. with our sunset location
guide.

Timing is just as crucial. Aim to arrive at your spot 30–60 minutes before the time of sunset. Not
only will this give you time to settle in and soak up the moment, but you’ll also witness the color
transitions that happen before and after the sun dips over the horizon.

The temperature can drop quickly as the sun sets. Stay cozy with a blanket, some snacks, and if
you’re venturing off the beaten path, make sure to carry a flashlight, a map, and let someone
know your plans. Staying a little past sunset time can reveal post-sunset hues that are just as
captivating and often less crowded.

Planning Your Sunset Drive with SIXT U.S.

Timing is everything when it comes to viewing the perfect sunset, so a reliable vehicle and
smooth journey are paramount. With SIXT, cruise with ease around Big Bend National Park or
Utah’s Canyonlands National Park for the perfect spot.

SIXT offers a premium selection of vehicles, from convertibles for open-air bliss to SUVs suitable
for mountainous areas. You choose the backdrop, we provide the ride. Plan your scenic route to
sync perfectly with sunset times, and you’ll not just be going for a drive, you’ll be making
memories on the road.

Your Ultimate Guide to Sunset Photography in the US

A sunset is one of the most beautiful sights you can witness. If you’ve ever seen the sky melt into streaks of orange, pink, and purple, you already know why it’s worth chasing. But snapping the perfect sunset photo? That takes more than just being in the right place at the right time.

Sunset photography is about understanding light, adjusting your settings, and knowing what equipment you need to get the perfect shot.

Whether you’re road-tripping with SIXT or catching golden hour from your own backyard, this guide will help you take sunset photos worth keeping.

Understanding the Magic of Golden Hour

Golden hour is the brief period before sunset when the light softens and warms, making it one of the best times to shoot. Shadows stretch, contrast levels out, and the scene takes on a more balanced, even tone. It’s not just a nice backdrop. The softer light helps reduce harsh highlights and makes both landscapes and portraits easier to capture clearly.

While golden hour technically lasts about an hour, the magic changes minute by minute. The lower the sun gets, the more intense the colors become, oranges deepen, skies turn peachy, and textures start to pop. If you’re shooting, this is the moment to play with silhouettes, lens flare, or reflections.

And the best part? You don’t need a fancy setup. Just good timing, a little patience, and a clear view of the horizon.

Sunset Photography Top Tips

Arrive Early

Finding the right sunset timing is key, so scout your spot well in advance. You’ll want time to frame your shot, check your angles, and fine-tune your settings without feeling rushed. Once the sun starts dropping, everything changes fast, the light shifts, shadows move, and the best moments can disappear in seconds. The earlier you’re ready, the more you can make the most of that golden light.

Focus on Composition

A stunning sunset is great, but the story you tell around it is just as important. Think about what’s in front of you, whether it’s a tree, a person, a city skyline, or a beach path. Adding something to the scene gives your shot depth and drama.

● Use the rule of thirds: Place the horizon in the top or bottom third of the frame, never just straight in the middle.
● Look for reflections: in water, windows, or shiny surfaces can add more texture and drama to your shot.

Embrace the Silhouette

Backlit scenes are ideal for creating striking silhouettes. To capture one, position your subject between you and the sun, then drop the exposure just a bit. The result? A crisp, dark shape that stands out against the glowing sky.

Play with White Balance

Sunset colors are warm, but sometimes your camera might ‘correct’ that warmth automatically. Switch to Cloudy or Shade white balance settings to keep (or even boost) the golden tones. On phones, look for white balance sliders in manual mode.

Top 5 Best US sunset Photography Destinations

While social media often highlights the same popular sunset spots, some of the most breathtaking views for sunset photography are hidden in quieter corners of the U.S. From volcanic craters to river canyons and the valleys of Yellowstone, these five under-the-radar gems offer unforgettable sunsets without the crowds.

Hawaii-sunset
Sunset in Hawaii, USA

1. Calcite Springs Overlook, Wyoming

Perched above the winding Yellowstone River, Calcite Springs Overlook is a top destination for capturing breathtaking sunsets. The vivid blues of the river contrast with the lush greenery, creating a stunning visual experience, perfect for photographers. While it doesn’t get much social media buzz, the view is unforgettable. For the best shots, visit in early fall when Wyoming’s skies are clearest, allowing the canyon to glow with golden hues as the sun sets.

2. Skagit Valley, Washington

Skagit Valley offers one of the most unique sunset settings in the country, with winding waterways, distant mountain peaks, and vibrant tulip fields. This quiet valley stays off the radar despite its beauty. The ideal time for shooting sunsets is from early July to late September, when cloud cover is at its lowest and the fiery sky creates a spectacular backdrop for the landscape.

3. Kilauea Crater, Hawaii

For those looking to photograph a sunset like no other, Kilauea Crater on the Big Island of Hawaii is a hidden gem. The crater’s vastness makes for an otherworldly scene as the sun sets, igniting the sky with molten gold and deep crimson. Despite its minimal online presence, Kilauea offers an unparalleled, secluded experience for sunset photography. Plan your visit outside the rainy season (April through September) for the clearest skies and the most vivid sunset shots.

4. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii

Another Hawaiian gem, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, offers dramatic sunset views over a volcanic landscape. With a growing number of TikTok searches, it’s becoming a top spot for sunset enthusiasts. The best time for photography is from mid-May to late September when the skies are clear and the sunsets’ fiery hues mirror the park’s raw, geothermal energy, providing a striking backdrop for your photos.

5. Jenne Farm, Washington

Tucked away on Whidbey Island, Jenne Farm is a peaceful retreat perfect for capturing serene sunset shots. The rolling hills and expansive skies make for an idyllic landscape, especially in late spring and summer when the sky is bathed in warm, tranquil hues. While it’s not widely known on social media, Jenne Farm’s sunsets are stunning and perfect for photographers seeking a more serene, undisturbed location.

Essential Items for Your Sunset Photography

You don’t need a pro kit to shoot beautiful sunsets, but the right tools can help you unlock even
more creative potential. Here’s what to pack:

Camera or Smartphone

● DSLR or Mirrorless: Full control, better low-light performance, and interchangeable
lenses.
● Smartphone: Newer models have incredible sensors and Pro modes. Just don’t forget
to clean your lens.

Tripod

Even the steadiest hands can struggle in low light. A tripod keeps things crisp, especially for
long exposure shots or timelapses.

● Compact travel tripod: Light, easy to carry, perfect for road trips.
● Smartphone tripod: Affordable and often includes remote shutters.

Lens Choices

● Wide-angle (10–24mm): Ideal for big landscapes and dramatic skies.
● Telephoto (70–200mm): Great for isolating the sun or zooming in on distant
silhouettes.

Smartphones benefit from external clip-on lenses if you want to get fancy.

Remote Shutter or Timer

Avoid camera shake by using a remote shutter release or setting a 2-second timer

Editing Apps & Software

Sunset shots come alive in post. Use editing tools to tweak exposure, contrast, highlights, and color balance.
● Desktop: Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, Capture One
● Mobile: Lightroom Mobile, Snapseed, VSCO

Lake Butte Overlook

This scenic overlook sits high above Yellowstone Lake and offers panoramic views of the water and the Absaroka Mountains. As the sun begins to lower, the lake mirrors the vibrant colors of the sky, transforming into a breathtaking palette of golds and purples. It’s especially beautiful in late summer when the skies are clearest. The overlook is easily accessible by car with nearby parking, and the short walk to the viewpoint is manageable for most visitors.

Artist Point, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

Perched along the south rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Artist Point offers a breathtaking panorama of the canyon’s vividly colored walls and the thunderous Lower Falls. When daylight fades, the canyon walls glow with rich amber tones, and the mist from the Lower Falls captures the final light of day. It’s an exceptional hotspot for photos and also a serene place for quiet reflection. Plan to arrive early to secure a good spot, as this area tends to attract crowds. This viewpoint also has easy access along a pathway, a short walk from the parking lot.

Grand Prismatic Spring Overlook

The overlook, accessible via the Fairy Falls Trail, provides a bird’s-eye view of the spring’s radiant rings. Although the trail is moderately challenging, the experience is well worth it. Wearing sturdy shoes and planning ensures you’ll be able to enjoy the journey and the stunning view ahead.

Often referred to as “America’s Serengeti”, Lamar Valley is a wide, open stretch of landscape where wildlife and wide-angle views dominate the scene. Essential Tips for Capturing the Perfect Sunset

Watching a Yellowstone sunset is magical, but capturing it well takes a bit of preparation. Whether you’re using professional equipment or your smartphone, the following tips will help you make the most of the moment.

Permits and Fees

Yellowstone requires a standard entrance fee, with options for seven-day or annual passes. If you plan to visit multiple national parks, the America the Beautiful Pass offers exceptional value.

Best Time to Visit

The park is open year-round, but late spring through early fall offers accessible roads, moderate weather, and open facilities. For smaller crowds and crisp air, consider a visit in early June or late September. The best time of year to experience Yellowstone’s sunsets is between late spring and early fall. During these months, the weather is more stable, wildlife is active, and roads are generally clear of snow.

Timing

For the best time to view the perfect sunset, arrive 30 to 60 minutes before sunset so you can scout your location, set up your gear, and enjoy the changing light as it builds to its peak. Many spots fill up quickly, particularly in peak season, and lighting can change dramatically in minutes. Leaving extra time will allow you to set up, settle in, and enjoy the spectacle without feeling rushed.

Weather Considerations

The weather can shift rapidly, especially at higher elevations. Even in summer, temperatures can drop into the 40s at night. Be prepared with layered clothing, rain gear, and sun protection. Always check the local forecast before heading out for the day.

Photography Gear

A camera with manual settings, a stable tripod, and a wide-angle lens will allow you to control exposure and frame sweeping views. If you’re using a smartphone, enable night mode and consider using a small tripod to reduce shake and improve sharpness.

Accommodation

You’ll find options ranging from rustic campgrounds and historic lodges within the park to hotels, motels, and vacation rentals in gateway towns like West Yellowstone, Gardiner, and Cody. Booking early is essential during peak months.

Stay safe

Always remain on marked trails and boardwalks, especially in geothermal zones. Wildlife tends to be more active at dusk, so keep a safe distance and carry bear spray if you plan to venture into remote areas. Dressing in layers and bringing a headlamp or flashlight can also enhance your comfort and safety.

Respect others and the environment

Sunsets are shared experiences. Lower your voice, avoid blocking paths or views, and follow ‘leave no trace’ principles to preserve the park for future visitors.

Embrace the Sunset at Yellowstone National Park

Watching the sunset in Yellowstone National Park is a moment of connection with one of America’s most majestic natural landscapes. From geysers to rivers, valleys to peaks, the park reveals its softer side as the day comes to a close.

With the comfort and flexibility of a SIXT rental vehicle, you can craft a sunset experience that fits your own rhythm. Whether you’re chasing wildlife in Lamar Valley or finding serenity by Yellowstone Lake, every evening brings something unforgettable.

Don’t just visit Yellowstone. Explore it fully, linger longer, and let each sunset be the highlight of a trip you’ll never forget with SIXT at the wheel.

Additionally, we evaluated popularity using Instagram hashtag searches, TikTok search volume, and Google search volume, as sourced from KeywordTool.io. We also considered the overall popularity of these locations based on general search interest, independent of sunset-related terms. By assigning weights to each metric based on its relevance, we ranked the top U.S. locations for viewing sunsets. Data is accurate as of January 21, 2025.

Miami, Florida, is famous for its gorgeous beaches, its Art Deco historic district, and its lively atmosphere. No matter your travel vibe, you’ll find plenty of things to do in Miami!

As the largest city in South Florida, though, finding parking in Miami can be a bit tricky sometimes, especially if you’re headed downtown or to the beach. But not to worry—we’re here to tell you where to find the best parking garages, street parking, and free parking in Miami. Whether you’re exploring Miami for several days or starting out on a South Florida road trip, read on for our expert tips.

Tips for parking in Miami

When you’re looking for parking in Miami, there are a few things unique to this city that will affect your search. Keep these general tips in mind:

  • Plan ahead: Miami hosts tons of events on any given day, so be sure to check the calendar to know which areas to avoid if possible—not only because of full lots and garages, but also because of price hikes.
  • High traffic: Downtown and South Beach tend to be the most crowded areas, so reserve parking in advance if you can.
  • Use apps: There are several mobile apps you can download to find parking in Miami on the go, like ParkMobile, PayByPhone and SpotHero. These apps show you available parking spaces in your area in real time.
  • Residential parking: Some residential zones in Miami require a permit to park there, so look for signs indicating this and never block driveways.
  • The heat: Miami is known for its hot weather, so try to park in garages or in the shade when possible.

So, pick up your vehicle at the SIXT branch at Miami airport or in Miami Beach and hit the road!

Where to find parking garages and lots in Miami

Parking garages are some of the most secure and convenient parking options in Miami. While garages might sometimes be more expensive than parking lots, they offer the perks of shade and added security. Garages should have signs at the entrance listing the cost, but be aware that there may be higher rates during special events.

There are plenty of parking garages in Miami, with many of them located in the downtown area or near other popular attractions. Miami is also home to both public and private parking garages, with the private ones usually being more expensive. Just be sure not to lose your ticket—you’ll need it to get out of the garage. Otherwise, you’ll have to pay a flat fee. Some garages also allow ticketless parking via an app, so it’s worth checking ahead for peace of mind.

Popular parking garages in Miami include the following:

  • 17th Street Garage: This public parking garage is located in South Beach, and rates tend to hover around $2 per hour, with a maximum daily rate of $20*. This garage also has EV charging stations.
  • Fifth & Alton Miami Beach Public Parking: This public garage also charges around $2 per hour* and is located on the southern side of Miami Beach near the bridge to the mainland. The maximum daily rate is $20*.
  • Miami-Dade Cultural Center Garage: This parking garage is located in the heart of downtown near Government Center, giving easy access to several highways and attractions. Rates start at $3 per half hour for up to 2.5 hours*.
  • Bayfront Parking: This garage is situated next to Bayfront Park along the coast, and the rate is a flat rate of $20*.

There are also plenty of parking lots in Miami, and while shade isn’t guaranteed, they might be cheaper than some of the garages you’ll come across.

Some lots in popular locations include the following:

  • Miami Beach Parking Lot: This lot is located at the south end of South Beach on Washington Avenue and costs $2 per hour*. If this lot is full, there are at least two more within a 5-minute drive.
  • You’ll find several private lots in the Wynwood area, including on the corner of NW 23rd and NW 5th, as well as off NW2nd behind the convention center.

Parking apps can also help you find available spots in nearby parking lots and garages in real time.

SIXT pro tip: Parking garages are much more plentiful in Miami than parking lots, unless you’re headed to Miami Beach. To save money on parking, we recommend looking for public garages in your desired destination.

Where to find on-street parking in Miami

If you don’t want to pay for parking in a garage or a lot, you can also find on-street parking in Miami. This city has around 9000 on-street parking spots, but most of them are metered, so you’ll need to pay attention to time restrictions.

Most of the meters run from 8 a.m. until midnight, but there will be some permit zones and zones with no-parking days due to street cleaning. Meters usually accept coins, credit, and debit cards, while some may also accept dollar bills. Meters typically run from 7 a.m. until 2 a.m.

You can find metered street parking in Miami in the following areas:

  • Downtown Miami: There is metered parking along Biscayne Boulevard and near the Port.
  • South Beach: Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive in Miami Beach have metered parking spots for $4 per hour.* Enforcement hours run from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m.
  • Wynwood: There is limited metered parking available in this neighborhood along NW 36th and NE 29th.
  • Brickell: Limited metered parking is available in this area, usually along SE 15th.

SIXT pro tip: If you’re heading to Miami Beach and looking for street parking, it might be better to park in the North Beach area, as these meters are typically about $1 cheaper per hour* than meters in South Beach.

Where to find free parking in Miami

Don’t want to pay for parking in Miami? You’re in luck—there are a select few areas where you can find free parking. The Coconut Grove and Coral Gables areas usually offer free parking in designated zones. If you’re looking for free parking in Downtown Miami or Miami Beach, it’s best to download ParkMobile or SpotHero to find free spots.

SIXT pro tip: You can also access free parking in Miami if you park in metered spots outside of enforcement hours, and some of the garages we mentioned above give you the first 2 hours of parking free. Brickell City Centre also has an underground garage where the first 2 hours are free*.

Your last option for free parking in Miami is to use one of the city’s Park and Ride lots. These lots are open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and no overnight parking is allowed. You can park in these lots free of charge and use the Metrobus to get to your final destination. Some of the most convenient Park and Ride lots are listed below:

  • Tamiami Station Park and Ride: This lot is located at 14710 SW 8th Street. Park and then ride the 837 Express Bus* to downtown Miami.
  • Dolphin Park and Ride: Located at 12065 NW 12th Street, the 836 bus provides a direct service to downtown every 10 minutes during peak hours and every 30 minutes during off-peak hours.*

SIXT pro tip: There are several other Park and Ride lots available, but they only have connecting bus routes to the downtown area. If you want a direct, quick service, the Tamiami Station and Dolphin Park and Ride are your best bet.
